the kitchen gardener: green onions

hey. you know that thing you’ve been reading on pinterest lately about growing green onions from your grocery store scraps? well, it works.


the how-to:
after purchasing and using your green onions, clean up the white rooted ends with your knife or a pair of scissors. ideally, you want only the white to be showing, because it will encourage each root system to shoot out more than one stalk. place in a clear jar, root down (i used a small mason jar) and cover the roots in water. set in a sunny window, and then remark at how ridiculously quickly you have brand new green onions to harvest (the picture above is at day 3). also realize, bemusedly, that your apartment now smells fairly strongly of green onions.
